MapleLove – Part 6
Though the new school term had already started, Keline wasn’t ready for school. She was there in class only physically, mentally she was somewhere else. In fact, she was so preoccupied with the thoughts of BK that there just wasn’t any more space for whatever the teachers were teaching to enter her head. Everyday she couldn’t wait to get home to sms BK (she wasn’t allow to bring her handphone to school). Instead of helping with the housework which she used to, Keline now spent most of her time in her room smsing rather than doing her homework. Her face would light up whenever she received a reply from BK who would sometimes be slow in his response. Once, she became so impatient that she decided to get a reply straight from the horse mouth. BK though surprised to receive her call, was pleased to be hearing her voice for the first time. Keline was just as thrilled to finally hear the voice of her virtual husband. Since then, both used their mouth more than their eyes (to read sms) and were spending more time glued to the phone.
Then came the day when Keline was afraid to go home. She had just received her termly report card and she didn’t dare show it to her mother. She had done badly, failing most of her subjects; something that had never happened to her before. Her mother was equally surprised when she saw the results. She asked Keline if she was under a lot of pressure as she had noticed her daughter spending most of her time in her room, presumably revising her work. Keline nodded in agreement, not knowing how to account for her poor performance. Her mother then told her not to push herself too hard and that she shouldn't be cooping up in her room all day long. Keline nodded in agreement again.
One night after returning late from work, Keline's mother realised that Keline's room was still lit. She decided to tell Keline to stop work and to get to bed. Not wanting to alert her, she entered without knocking and what she saw made her fuming mad. There lying on the bed was Keline, chatting and laughing happily away. Keline dropped her handphone when she saw her mother in the room. Without asking for an explanation, Keline’s mother picked up the handphone and stormed out of the room with it. Keline realised that she had got herself into hot soup but somehow she was more concerned how she was going to keep in touch with her 'dear'. She then decided to get help from her best friend, Pauline.
The next morning, she told Pauline what had happened and asked her to send a message to BK to explain the situation to him. She also wanted her to tell him to meet her at Maple that night at midnight. Pauline who hadn’t seen her friend in such a desperate state before, agreed to help. Keline knew that she would be taking another big risk to arrange to meet BK online. Her mother was still not on talking term with her and if she were to be caught mapling past sleeping time, she couldn’t imagine how her mother would punish her. But to her, not being able to contact BK was torturous enough for her. In fact it would be the worst punishment that she could think of. With that in mind, she waited patiently for her mother and brother to get to bed and for the hand of the clock to reach 12.
